Meghalaya MLAs explore AI, public finance at B’luru leadership meet
SHILLONG, May 13: Seven legislators from Meghalaya completed the State Legislators Leadership Programme held at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, from May 10 to 12. According to a statement here, the residential programme was jointly organised by Azim Premji University and PRS Legislative Research to strengthen legislative capacity through discussions on governance, public policy and leadership. The participating legislators from Meghalaya included Deputy Speaker Limison D. Sangma (Raksamgre), Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh), Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh (Umsning), Ronnie V. Lyngdoh (Mylliem), Gabriel Wahlang (Nongstoin), Ollan Sing Suin (Mawsynram) and Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah (Mawphlang). The sessions focused on enhancing legislative effectiveness, with experts leading discussions on public finance, budget scrutiny, and critical issues in the education and health sectors. Lawmakers also explored contemporary challenges, such as the impact of Artificial Intelligence on citizen services, youth employment and effective public engagement through digital communication. The programme provided a platform for peer learning and expert insights aimed at supporting informed policymaking and addressing constituency-level priorities in the state.

Assam Regiment to represent Indian Army at Seychelles Natl Day Parade
SHILLONG, May 13: The Assam Regiment has been selected to represent the Indian Army at the National Day Parade of Seychelles on June 29, in recognition of its discipline and ceremonial excellence. The selection allows the Regiment to showcase the Indian Army’s standards of military drill and precision on an international platform. The honour comes in the backdrop of the Regiment’s recent success at the 2024 Republic Day Parade, where its marching contingent was adjudged the Best Marching Contingent for the fourth consecutive time. In 2026, the Assam Regimental Centre contingent earned the dual distinction of being named the ‘Best Army Marching Contingent’ and the ‘Popular Choice’ winner. The Regiment has a storied history of ceremonial precision, having won the prestigious Republic Day title six times—in 1995, 2004, 2012, 2016, 2022 and 2026. It also finished as runner-up in 2001 and 2008. Officials stated that the achievement is a testament to the Assam Regiment’s unwavering commitment to teamwork and professionalism. The contingent will now carry forward this legacy as it prepares for the Seychelles National Day celebrations next month, they said.

NEIGRIHMS celebrates International Nurses Day
SHILLONG, May 13: The NEIGRIHMS Nurses’ Association celebrated International Nurses Day on Tuesday to honour the dedication and vital contributions of the nursing fraternity to the healthcare system. The event, which marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, was attended by NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. (Dr.) Nalin Mehta as the chief guest and College of Nursing Principal Prof. Nochovono Tase as the guest of honour. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mehta praised the nurses for their professionalism and tireless service. He highlighted their indispensable role in healthcare delivery and commended their efforts in conducting regular education and training programmes for nurses across the Northeast. He stated that it is essential to recognise the hard work of nurses in promoting health and saving lives. Meanwhile, speaking on this year’s theme ‘Our Nurses, Our Future, Empowered Nurses Save Lives’, Nursing Superintendent Irene A. Nongthraw emphasised that skilled and compassionate care is pivotal to improving patient outcomes and strengthening the health sector. The programme was also attended by Deputy Director (Admin) I/c David T. Umdor and members of the medical faculty. The celebration concluded with a cultural programme featuring performances by nursing staff and students.
ADG NCC reviews aqua
adventure camp at Umiam
SHILLONG, May 13: Major Anurag Vij, Additional Director General (ADG) of NCC North Eastern Region, visited the Aqua Adventure Camp at Umiam Lake on Tuesday. The camp was organised by the 12 Assam NCC Battalion under the aegis of the NCC Group Jorhat and NER Directorate. The ADG was received with a traditional welcome and a Bihu dance performance by the cadets. During the visit, he reviewed training activities, including dinghy sailing, power boating, and safety and rescue drills, praising the professionalism and enthusiasm displayed by the participants. Interacting with cadets from the Shillong and Jorhat groups, Major Vij urged them to use the opportunity to build confidence, discipline, and leadership qualities. He noted that adventure training is vital for developing resilient youth capable of facing future challenges. The programme concluded with the felicitation of cadets who excelled in the training activities and those who participated in the cultural event.
