Guwahati, May 14: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and lightning with heavy to very heavy rain and gusty wind in the next two to three days at isolated places over Guwahati in Kamrup Metro district and other districts of Assam.

“The weather pattern suggests that thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rain is very likely at the isolated places in the city and other districts in the coming two to three days, which may aggravate water logging, slow vehicular movement and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets,” a statement issued here by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Thursday.

The district authorities and ASDMA are therefore closely monitoring the situation while emergency response systems are being kept on alert.

In view of the situation, ASDMA has requested residents of Guwahati to take all necessary precautions and remain vigilant.

“Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall,” the authority said.

“Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides. The status of the situation will be updated by ASDMA on its official website (https://asdma.assam.gov.in/resource/assam-weather-forecast) and on all its social media handles from time to time for general awareness,” it said.

ASDMA further urged people to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain.

Notably, several flood and waterlogging-prone areas in Guwahati have been inundated during pre-monsoon showers of late, throwing life out of gear in the city.

Besides, more than 300 locations have been identified as landslide-prone zones in the city and are under close surveillance even as public awareness initiatives have been intensified to alert residents living in such vulnerable pockets.
