Shillong, May 16: The 2nd Meghalaya Open Taekwondo Championship and the 1st State Level Taekwondo Championship (Kyorugi and Poomsae) got underway at the Laban Sports Club here on Saturday, drawing participation from hundreds of athletes across the Northeast and neighbouring states.
Organised by the All-Meghalaya Taekwondo Association, the two-day championship has attracted competitors from Meghalaya, Assam, West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland and Mizoram.The event also features the presence of several distinguished figures from the sport, including Sabitri Pradhan, a seven-time world champion and Kyorugi international referee from Sikkim Police Service, and Lee Wang Yong, the India taekwondo team coach from South Korea.Among others present were Suman Tamang, General Secretary of the Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association and a national gold medallist, and Joseph Thansanga, General Secretary of the Mizoram Amateur Taekwondo Association.The championship began with an opening ceremony attended by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, who highlighted the importance of discipline and respect in martial arts. He also noted the encouraging participation of athletes across different age groups in the competition.
The tournament will continue on Sunday with Kyorugi and Poomsae events across multiple categories.
