TURA, May 17: BJP leader and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak on Sunday hinted at a possible nexus between Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and non-tribal politicians S.G. Esmatur Mominin and Sofior Rehman after both of them were granted bail within days of each other.
“Is there nexus between CM and Mominin? Is it possible that Mominin and Rehman were not charge sheeted because Mominin contacted the CM before coming to Tura? The detention of Garo leaders alongside the release of Muslim leaders raises concerns about impartiality by the state government. Is the state government favouring Muslim leaders like Mominin and Rehman while unfairly targeting Garo leaders who were defending tribal rights? The Muslim leaders have allegedly incited communal tensions through social media and with the help of outsiders. Mominin also claimed that he talked to CM before coming to Tura, and Rehman is in the NPP. Is there a nexus?” Bernard questioned.
Reminding that the arrested Garo leaders were standing up for constitutional rights of the tribals, Bernard felt that if Mominin and Rehman were not charged, the same leniency should also apply to the Garo leaders.
“The police must not be swayed by personal biases or external pressures. Equal treatment under the law is paramount, necessitating the release of the Garo leaders on bail. The involvement of some MDCs who joined the NPP Executive Committee, in showing solidarity with the arrested leaders also warrants equal legal scrutiny. An investigation by the Home Department into the differential treatment is essential to instil faith in justice,” he stated.
