SHILLONG, May 18: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Monday countered statements made by BJP leader Bernard Marak regarding bail granted in an ongoing case, asserting that judicial decisions are independent and cannot be influenced by the government.
In a statement, NPP Garo Hills Region spokesperson Aldo A Sangma said bail is a legal provision and does not equate to an acquittal. He added that investigations are ongoing and the law will take its course.
The party maintained that in a democracy, courts decide matters based on legal principles and facts, while the executive has no role in determining judicial outcomes. The NPP urged political leaders to exercise restraint when commenting on sensitive legal matters to avoid misleading the public and to uphold confidence in democratic institutions.
Highlighting the state’s progress, the party noted that the state and central governments continue to collaborate on infrastructure and welfare. It appealed to stakeholders to maintain a healthy political discourse and work constructively for the interest of the state.
The NPP further reiterated its commitment to peace, communal harmony, and inclusive development across Meghalaya.
