The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Centre and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to treat a PIL concerning the film Dhurandhar: The Revenge as a formal representation and take a decision on the concerns raised.
The petition, filed by an SSB personnel, alleged that the Ranveer Singh-starrer discloses sensitive tactical information related to India’s intelligence and defence operations, potentially violating the Official Secrets Act.
A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that while films are primarily made for entertainment, their impact on society cannot be ignored.
The court said the issues raised appeared to have substance and required proper examination by the authorities. It directed the government and the CBFC to consider the petition and communicate their decision to the petitioner.
The PIL alleged that the film shows classified protocols, undercover identities, and details of military operations, and could endanger national security. It also claimed that certain characters resemble real officials and martyrs. The petitioner sought framing of a “spy movie protocol,” cancellation of certification, and a ban on release in cinemas and on OTT platforms. (PTI)
