SHILLONG: A delegation of the Meghalaya People’s Front, the Opposition alliance in the State Assembly, met Governor K.K. Paul on Monday to apprise him of the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo Hills.
Opposition members James Sangma (NPP) and Donkupar Roy (Leader of Opposition), Titosstarwell Chyne, Jemino Mawthoh and Paul Lyngdoh (all from UDP) who met the Governor termed the visit as a courtesy call following the culmination of the Assembly session.
However, contentious issues including the law and order situation in Garo Hills and the ‘ineffective approach’ by the Congress-led MUA-II
Government in tackling the issue was taken up during the meeting.
Even though they appreciated certain steps taken by the Government, the Opposition members sought the intervention of the Governor in addressing the problem of insurgency in Garo Hills.
Earlier on November 25, 2013, the MPF had met the Governor seeking his intervention to check the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo Hills and also demanded a high level probe into the alleged politician-militant nexus. However, there was no feedback from the Governor on these issues raised by the Opposition members then.
Delegation to leave for Delhi: A delegation of Opposition members will leave for Delhi on Tuesday to meet Central leaders and the Prime Minister to seek their involvement in addressing issues relating law and order situation in the State.
The delegation will also take up the issue of politician-militant nexus especially in relation to the allegation of links between ANVC-B and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
