SHILLONG, May 25: The Transport department has stated that no bike taxi firm will be permitted to operate in the state without obtaining necessary government approvals.
The warning follows a recent meeting between city and suburban taxi driver associations and East Khasi Hills District Transport Officer (DTO) R Hinge. The associations called for a crackdown on illegal “offline” bike taxi services currently operating in Shillong.
Responding to these concerns, Commissioner and Secretary of the Transport Department, Sanjay Goyal, said the department has already taken action against such firms, including closing down their offices.
“Companies must fulfill all legal requirements before operating. Clear instructions have been given to act against any illegal bike operations,” Goyal said.
Regarding the continued presence of unauthorised bike taxis, Goyal pointed out that the government has already notified the Bike Aggregator Rules and Bike Rental Rules to regularise the sector.
“I urge entrepreneurs to take advantage of these rules,” he added.
Taxi operators had previously raised concerns over the rise in two-wheelers being used commercially without authorisation, specifically those allegedly operating under the Rapido banner.
