NEW DELHI, May 28: Bangladesh’s new government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is reviewing a controversial trade agreement signed with the United States by the previous Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration shortly before the February elections.
BNP leader Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal said the government would reassess the deal while protecting Bangladesh’s sovereignty and national interests.
Critics claim the agreement was signed secretly and contains provisions favouring US strategic and economic interests. Concerns include tariff concessions for American goods, removal of barriers to US agricultural and biotechnology exports, and restrictions on Bangladesh entering agreements with countries such as China and Russia.
Reports also suggest the deal could limit Bangladesh’s ability to purchase nuclear technology from certain countries. The agreement has faced mounting criticism since the BNP-led government assumed office earlier this year. (IANS)
