NONGPOH, May 28: In a harrowing incident that has left residents of Ri-Bhoi shaken, an eight-year-old girl narrowly escaped a suspected kidnapping attempt after bravely fleeing from her captors and raising an alarm in a remote village.
According to sources, the incident occurred on the evening of May 27 when the minor had gone to visit a relative in a nearby village. The relative, locally known as “Masan”, allegedly lured the girl by asking her to accompany him to buy meat. When she refused, he slapped her, forcibly made her sit on his two-wheeler, and took her away against her will.
Upon reaching an isolated stretch of road, the accused stopped his motorcycle where three other unidentified men were waiting with two more two-wheelers. The terrified girl later revealed that she overheard the men planning to stuff her into a sack and sell her. The suspects even brought out a yellow sack to carry out their plan.
However, in a moment of courage, the girl managed to break free and screamed for help. Her cries alerted a group of workers who were laying water pipelines nearby. The workers immediately rushed to her rescue and took her to the village headman, who informed her family and local authorities.
The girl’s family promptly lodged an FIR at the Women Police Station in Nongpoh. Acting swiftly, police arrested the accused “Masan”, and are on the hunt for the other suspects.
