SHILLONG, May 29: Police on Friday arrested two persons in connection with the alleged trespassing and assault at the construction site of Centrepoint Group’s second Ri-Kynjai project in Laitkynsew, Sohra.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the arrests and said that the accused have been remanded to four days’ police custody.
Their identities have not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.
According to the Centrepoint Group, approximately 15 youths, allegedly claiming to be members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), entered the site without permission on Thursday afternoon and assaulted the labourers.
Five workers sustained injuries in the attack. One worker, Raj Kumar Sharma, was hospitalised with grievous head injuries.
Condemning the incident, Centrepoint Group Managing Director Larsing Sawyan termed the attack “violent and unlawful”.
He urged the authorities to take strict action, warning that such incidents could discourage investment and negatively impact Meghalaya’s long-term development.
