SHILLONG, May 29: A search is under way to identify the parents of a newborn male infant abandoned on the premises of Ganesh Das Hospital on May 25. The discovery at the state’s premier maternal health centre has raised urgent questions regarding the social pressures and lapses in support systems that lead to such tragedies in the capital.
Sadar Police have registered a case (No. 116 (03)2026) under Section 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This specific legal provision addresses the exposure and abandonment of a child under twelve years by a parent or caretaker, an offence that carries a prison sentence of up to seven years.
The infant is currently being cared for at the Specialized Adoption Agency at Nongthymmai Lum Sohphoh, Shillong.
The police have appealed to the public for any information that could help identify the parents or clarify the circumstances of the abandonment. Anyone with relevant details is requested to contact the Pasteur Beat House at 9362321122 or the Shillong Police Control Room (PCR) at 6009196479, 2222214, or 2222277.
