SHILLONG, May 30: The Trinamool Congress (TMC), largely inactive in Meghalaya since the 2023 Assembly elections, is holding internal discussions on whether to contest the upcoming Shillong Parliamentary by-election, party sources said.
“We are analysing the situation and will take a call,” a source close to the party said, confirming deliberations are under way but no final decision has been taken.
If TMC decides to enter the race, the bypoll would become a multi-cornered contest. Several parties have already announced candidates: the National People’s Party (NPP) has fielded D.R.L. Nonglait, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has nominated senior lawyer V.G.K. Kynta, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) is backing Batskhem Myrboh, and the Congress has chosen its president, Vincent H. Pala. Reports also suggest the BJP may field Mariahom Kharkrang, who has been actively meeting voters.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of Shillong MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon in February.
Election officials are expected to announce the schedule shortly. Political watchers say the coming weeks will be crucial as parties finalise candidates and frame their messages to voters across Shillong’s diverse electorate.
