SHILLONG, May 30: Meghalaya is targeting the creation of a total of 3,000 homestays across the state within the next 12 to 18 months as part of its efforts to expand tourism-linked livelihood opportunities, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said on Saturday.
Speaking during an interaction with residents and entrepreneurs in Smit village, Sangma said the state currently has nearly 900 operational homestays, while another 2,100 are expected to be sanctioned. He said homestays remain a key component of the state’s tourism strategy as they enable local families and communities to directly benefit from visitor spending.
During the visit, Sangma interacted with a local homestay owner, tourists and residents. Civic issues, including garbage collection, street lighting and littering, were also raised by villagers, to which Sangma assured that the concerns would be brought to the attention of the concerned departments.
The Chief Minister also highlighted tourism-linked initiatives under Skills Meghalaya, PRIME and CM Elevate, and said the upcoming 39th National Games in 2027 would create additional opportunities in tourism, hospitality and related sectors.
The visit was conducted under the CM Connect initiative aimed at facilitating direct engagement between the government and citizens.
