Olivia Rodrigo: I don’t need misery to write good songs

Olivia Rodrigo has said she wanted to prove that great music does not require suffering, revealing that her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, was inspired by a desire to create songs she loved without being miserable. Known for her emotionally charged breakup tracks, Rodrigo said the album reflects real-life experiences and follows a largely chronological journey through her feelings. She admitted she initially planned to explore sadness within love songs, but genuine emotional struggles eventually shaped the record. Rodrigo also reflected on fame, saying growing up in the public eye has left her feeling mature in some ways but “stunted” in others, limiting her ability to make mistakes privately and learn from them.
