SHILLONG/NONGPOH, May 31: Hundreds of cycling enthusiasts joined Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, in Shillong on Sunday for a special edition of the “Sundays on Cycle” programme. The event, held as part of the nationwide Fit India Movement, aimed to promote active lifestyles and healthy living.
Organised at the State Central Library in collaboration with Khelo India and the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the event was attended by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, and senior officials. Mandaviya later posted on X that the initiative reflects the spirit of the Fit India Movement and encouraged citizens to integrate cycling into their daily routines.
In Nongpoh, Mandaviya reviewed the implementation of the Aspirational District Programme in Ri-Bhoi. During a meeting at the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini presented the progress of projects in healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem submitted several proposals to the Union Minister, including the establishment of a medical college in Ri-Bhoi.
While acknowledging that the Nongpoh Civil Hospital currently lacks some criteria, Syiem argued that the district’s “aspirational” status warrants special consideration to improve healthcare and create local employment.
The MLA also sought central assistance for a permanent campus and more vocational courses at the Nongpoh ITI, which currently operates from a rented building. Additionally, he requested that Ri-Bhoi be considered as a venue for certain events during the 2027 National Games, citing its favourable geography.
Addressing agricultural concerns, Syiem highlighted the challenges faced by Integrated Village Cooperative Societies (IVCS) due to market competition from outside poultry products. He proposed bringing a specialized team from Gujarat to train local farmers in poultry, piggery, and pineapple cultivation.
Mandaviya responded positively to the proposals, assuring steps to facilitate training and exploring agreements for technical support and market linkages to boost exports from the district.
