SHILLONG, June 3: National People’s Party (NPP) state working president Hamletson Dohling on Wednesday disclosed that he has declined the party leadership’s offer to contest the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya, opting instead to focus on state politics and his constituency.
Dohling confirmed that his name was among those discussed for the upper house seat during high-level party meetings.
“It is true that my name was under consideration. I had discussions with National President Conrad K. Sangma and State President Prestone Tynsong regarding the Rajya Sabha election. While I appreciate the confidence shown in me, I conveyed that I am not yet ready to move to Delhi,” Dohling said.
Explaining his decision, the NPP leader said he remains committed to addressing the needs of the Mylliem constituency and the broader challenges facing the state.
“I want to concentrate on serving the people here as there is significant work to be done. I feel it is too early for me to move elsewhere, and I would prefer that senior leaders be considered for the role first,” he added.
Dohling emphasised a measured approach to his political career, stating that he did not want to take on a responsibility prematurely. “Politics is not easy. If I take up a role and fail to deliver, it would not be right. I want to move forward step by step,” he said.
