SHILLONG, June 5: Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Friday participated in a tree plantation programme at the Golf Club in Shillong as part of the BJP’s nationwide celebration of World Environment Day.
Speaking on the occasion, Nadda said the plantation drive was being carried out under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Tree One Mother’ campaign, which encourages people to plant trees in honour of their mothers while promoting environmental conservation.
Informing that the prime minister had called upon citizens to take part in large-scale plantation activities on World Environment Day, he said that BJP workers across the country were participating in the initiative by planting saplings in different locations.
Highlighting the campaign’s message, Nadda said a mother serves her children selflessly and unconditionally, just as nature sustains and nurtures human life. He noted that the programme seeks to strengthen environmental awareness while recognising the vital role nature plays in people’s lives.
According to Nadda, the ‘One Tree One Mother’ initiative was launched in 2024 and expanded significantly in 2025. He said lakhs of BJP workers were taking part in plantation activities across the country this year as part of the campaign.
Nadda said that during his visit to Shillong, he and other party leaders joined the plantation drive in keeping with the nationwide effort.
Senior BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek accompanied the union minister during the programme.
During the event, Hek stressed the need to preserve and protect the environment amid growing ecological challenges and urged people to contribute towards a greener future through sustained plantation efforts.
He said safeguarding forests, water sources and biodiversity was a shared responsibility and essential for ensuring environmental sustainability for future generations.
