SHILLONG, June 5: Climate change is increasingly impacting Meghalaya through rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity and declining rainfall, Chairman of the Environment Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Rakkam A Sangma said on Friday, while urging people to take a more active role in environmental conservation.
Speaking after a World Environment Day plantation drive at the Assembly premises in Khyndai Lad, Rakkam said greater public awareness and community participation were essential to addressing environmental challenges and securing a sustainable future.
He stressed that protecting the environment was a shared responsibility and called on people to actively engage in tree plantation and conservation efforts.
The Environment Committee celebrated the day by planting around 30 saplings within the Assembly campus. The programme was attended by committee members Ollan Singh Suin, Arbinstone B Marak and Nujorki Sungoh, along with officials of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat and the Social Forestry Department.
During the programme, Rakkam said the committee would continue to take up issues concerning environmental protection and sustainable development in the public interest. He also acknowledged the efforts of the state government in implementing initiatives aimed at conserving and protecting the environment.
On the other hand, Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma said World Environment Day should not be limited to symbolic plantation activities.
He stressed that the responsibility of institutions and individuals did not end with planting saplings but extended to ensuring their survival and growth so that they could make a meaningful contribution to the state’s environment and greenery.
