SHILLONG, June 7: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma congratulated the Indian women’s football team for clinching the SAFF Women’s Championship title and hailed Meghalaya footballer Sanfida Nongrum for her outstanding contribution to the triumph.
India defeated Bangladesh in the final to reclaim the championship after a gap of seven years, with Nongrum playing a pivotal role throughout the tournament.
The Meghalaya striker scored a crucial goal in the final against Bangladesh and had earlier netted the lone goal in India’s semifinal victory over Bhutan, helping the team secure a place in the title clash.Nongrum’s impressive performances earned her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.In a post on X, Sangma lauded the Indian team, popularly known as the Blue Tigresses, for bringing the prestigious trophy back home.“The #BlueTigresses bring the SAFF Women’s Championship trophy back home after 7 years! A phenomenal game against Bangladesh. Congratulations Team India!” he wrote.
