The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of a controversy surrounding a stand-up comedy show in Gurugram, Haryana, after viral videos allegedly showed remarks glorifying sexual coercion and non-consensual behaviour towards women being made and applauded by the audience.
The Commission expressed serious concern over the content, stating that normalising or trivialising behaviour that undermines a woman’s consent, dignity and bodily autonomy can have damaging social consequences and contribute to attitudes that enable gender-based violence.
NCW has issued hearing notices to comedian Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra, directing them to appear before the Commission on June 22 at 4 pm. The matter will be examined during the hearing.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has also written to the Haryana Director General of Police seeking immediate, stringent and time-bound action.
The Commission has asked for a detailed Action Taken Report within seven days.
The report sought by the NCW includes information on the registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other applicable laws, action taken against those involved, verification of the viral video evidence, and the role of organisers, performers and venue management in the incident.
The Commission further requested details of measures being planned by the state police to ensure that public entertainment platforms and digital spaces do not promote or normalise sexual harassment, coercion or conduct that violates women’s dignity.
Strongly condemning the incident, the NCW reiterated that consent is non-negotiable and said any attempt to portray sexual coercion, entitlement or disrespect towards a woman’s autonomy as humour or entertainment is unacceptable.
The Commission added that it would continue to closely monitor developments in the case. (ANI)
