Atlanta, June 14: Spain will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against tournament debutants Cabo Verde on Monday, with Luis de la Fuente’s side aiming to make a strong start in Group H.
The reigning European champions are among the favourites to lift the trophy in the United States, Canada and Mexico, alongside France. Spain’s group also includes Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, with La Roja widely expected to top the standings.Spain arrive at the tournament in impressive form, having gone unbeaten in their last 10 matches, winning seven of them. They also head into the opener on the back of a 3-1 victory over Peru in their final warm-up match.Despite winning the World Cup in 2010, Spain have endured disappointing campaigns in recent editions of the tournament. They were eliminated in the group stage in 2014 and exited in the round of 16 in both 2018 and 2022. (Agencies)
