Santa Clara, June 14: Boualem Khoukhi scored deep into stoppage time as Qatar snatched a stunning 1-1 draw against Group B favourites Switzerland on Saturday to earn their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup.
Breel Embolo had given Switzerland the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute after being fouled by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. However, despite dominating possession and creating several chances, the Swiss failed to add to their advantage.
They paid the price in the fourth minute of added time when Khoukhi rose to head home the equaliser, sparking wild celebrations among the Qatar players.
“Every draw feels like a loss,” Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka said after the match.
Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui praised his side’s mentality and discipline, saying his players believed until the end.
The result marked a significant moment for Qatar, who had lost all three matches when they hosted the 2022 World Cup and became the first host nation to exit the tournament without a point. (AP)
