SHILLONG, June 18: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, on Thursday assured that police are actively investigating the deaths of two Hajong youths. His statement follows intense demands from the Hajong community and the Hajong Students’ Union for a thorough probe into what they suspect to be a case of double murder.
Speaking to reporters, Tynsong declined to comment on specific details, noting that the matter remains under active investigation. He stated it would be inappropriate to discuss specifics while police examine all aspects of the incident. However, he expressed confidence that the investigation would ultimately reveal the truth.
The remarks come amid growing calls for a fair and transparent inquiry to determine if foul play was involved. Student unions representing the Hajong and Koch communities have publicly condemned the “alleged murder” of Simanta Hajong (21) and Prinomi Hajong (22).
While East Khasi Hills Police maintains that the case appears to be a double suicide, the unions strongly reject this narrative. They argue that the circumstances point to something far more sinister.
The bodies of Simanta, a resident of Ranikor, and Prinomi, from Balat, were discovered in the early hours of June 14 at Lumsohphoh in Nongthymmai. They were found in an open space close to a footpath, near a roadside betel nut shop and a newly opened cafe-bar along the Shillong-Jowai road.
Community leaders question how the young couple could have chosen such a public, high-visibility spot for a joint suicide by hanging. They also highlighted that both youths were employed and stayed in employer-provided accommodations nearby.
