MIAMI, June 20: Uruguay will look to move a step closer to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they face giant-killers Cabo Verde in a pivotal Group H encounter on Sunday.
With all four teams in the group level on one point after the opening round of matches, the clash in Miami could play a decisive role in shaping the race for qualification.
Uruguay currently sit atop the standings on goal difference following a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia, while Cabo Verde are buoyed by a historic goalless draw against Spain.
The South American side endured a frustrating outing against Saudi Arabia in their tournament opener.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men struggled to create clear opportunities for much of the match and relied heavily on set-pieces for their attacking threat during the first half.
Although tactical changes after the break improved their performance, Uruguay only began to pose a serious danger in the closing stages. (AP)
