LOS ANGELES, June 20: Belgium and Iran will both be aiming to strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout stage when they meet in a crucial Group G encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.
With all four teams in the group level on one point after the opening round of matches, the contest in Los Angeles could prove decisive. A victory would put either side in a strong position to progress to the Round of 32, while defeat could leave them staring at a possible early exit.
Belgium opened their campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Egypt. The Red Devils fell behind after Emam Ashour’s stunning strike before an own goal by Mohamed Hany, forced by substitute Romelu Lukaku, helped them rescue a point.
The draw extended Belgium’s winless run in World Cup matches to three, a stark contrast to their previous record of 11 wins from 13 games in the tournament. The European side is also looking to bounce back from recent disappointments. (AP)
