SHILLONG, June 22: Former Congress MLA from West Shillong, Mohendro Rapsang will formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday along with a number of his supporters.
The induction programme will be held at the BJP’s state office and will be attended by BJP Meghalaya president Rikman G. Momin and other senior party leaders.
Rapsang had contested the 2013 Assembly elections from West Shillong on a Congress ticket but lost narrowly to UDP candidate Paul Lyngdoh by 481 votes.
He made a strong comeback in the 2018 polls, defeating Lyngdoh by a margin of 1,984 votes and served as MLA from 2018 to 2023.
His ties with Congress soured after he extended support to the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, leading to his suspension from the party. Ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, he joined the ruling NPP but lost to Paul Lyngdoh by a margin of 3,485 votes.
In February this year, Rapsang resigned from the NPP citing personal reasons.
