SHILLONG, June 25: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Thursday clarified that no formal discussion have taken place with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state over any merger or alliance, even as it affirmed that the state unit would abide by any decision taken by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
MPCC secretary Manuel Badwar told The Shillong Times that no formal talks are under way in Meghalaya despite speculation triggered by recent high-level meetings between Congress and TMC leaders at the national level.
However, he stressed that the state Congress would follow the line set by the AICC if the national leadership decides on a common political course.
Badwar acknowledged the evolving national political scenario could influence Meghalaya, echoing former chief minister and Leader of Opposition Mukul M. Sangma’s view on the impact of broader developments.
He noted a phase of consolidation among secular parties facing the BJP, with smaller outfits reassessing their futures and exploring alliances.
Referring to the TMC’s position, Badwar said its senior leaders would carefully evaluate the situation before charting their next steps. “They have an opportunity to redefine their political direction,” he added.
The MPCC maintained that any final decision on alliances rests with the respective central leaderships, even as opposition politics in the state appears headed for potential reconfiguration.
