Shillong, June 26: Meghalaya has formally established its own Triathlon Association, marking a significant step towards promoting the endurance sport in the state. However, its late formation could jeopardise the state’s chances of fielding athletes in triathlon at the 39th National Games, which Meghalaya is scheduled to host next year.
The Meghalaya Triathlon Association (MTA) was officially incorporated on June 15. The body is headed by long-distance runner Rephica Pde as president, while Shivani Pde has been appointed general secretary. Shaikupar Kharshiing, Badon Sing Tham and James Perry are among the other office-bearers.
The association has already begun conducting trials to identify and select athletes interested in competing in the sport.Triathlon is a demanding multi-discipline event comprising swimming, cycling and running. Standard race distances typically include a 750-metre swim, a 20-kilometre cycling leg and a five-kilometre run.
Despite the formation of the association, officials of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) believe it may have come too late for the state to participate in triathlon at the upcoming National Games.
According to an MSOA official, state sports associations are generally expected to be functional for several years before becoming eligible for affiliation, a key requirement for participation in major multi-sport events. The official noted that several new associations representing previously unrepresented disciplines have emerged in Meghalaya in recent years.
