SHILLONG, June 27: The Office of the District Medical & Health Officer (DMHO), East Khasi Hills, recently concluded a series of training sessions aimed at equipping traffic personnel and the student community with essential life-saving skills.
A week-long programme on CPR, Basic First Aid, and Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) screening was held at the Police Reserve in Shillong. Conducted in collaboration with the Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) and the Police Hospital, the initiative targeted Traffic Police personnel and Home Guard volunteers.
The training focused on enabling these first responders to provide immediate assistance during emergencies such as road accidents, cardiac arrests, choking, and fractures before professional medical help arrives. Alongside the practical training, an NCD screening drive was conducted to ensure early detection of hypertension and diabetes among the frontline personnel.
In a similar initiative, a one-day workshop was organised on June 26 for the teachers and students of St. Edmund’s Higher Secondary School. The session provided hands-on training in hands-only CPR, managing choking incidents and controlling bleeding.
Health officials stated that these programmes are designed to empower individuals to respond confidently during medical crises, potentially saving lives through timely intervention.
