SHILLONG, June 27: Moving beyond routine checkpoints, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) joined forces with Laitumkhrah Dorbar on Wednesday to crack down on the city’s nocturnal menace, penalising 80 violators and sending a clear message: the community and the law are now on the same page.
The enforcement drive, conducted under “Operation Safer Shillong,” involved traffic personnel and the Special Operation Team (SOT) blocking all entry and exit points simultaneously to ensure no offenders could evade the net. The operation specifically targeted drunk driving, illegal vehicle modifications, and other reckless behaviors that have increasingly frustrated residents.According to the enforcement report, officials detected 80 traffic violations and collected Rs 81,500 in fines.
In a move that emphasized accountability, motorists found driving under the influence were not permitted to continue their journeys. They were only released after a family member or guardian arrived to take them and their vehicles home safely, turning the crackdown into a moment of community-enforced discipline.
The Shillong Traffic Police stated that these weekend enforcement drives will continue regularly to promote responsible driving, discourage drunk driving, and ensure strict compliance with traffic rules to achieve zero road fatalities.
