River washes away subway in SWKH village

MAWKYRWAT: The people of Mawthawpdah area under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block, South West Khasi Hills District, are facing hardships after a subway at Umsohlang was washed away by the swelling Umsohlang river due to the heavy rainfall for last for two consecutive days and cut off the Mawthawpdah-Jakrem road.

According to the people from Umsohlang area, the heavy rain which started on Monday morning, washed away the subway in the Umsohlang river on Tuesday. The incident has created hardships to the people of Mawthawpdah area as there is no alternaThe people also expressed their disappointment over the construction of the bridge in slow pace over the river by the contractor. They also alleged that the incident happened because of the negligence on the part of the contractor who put only two pipes for the subway at a time when there is torrential rain during monsoon. Speaking to The Shillong Times, Executive Engineer of PWD Mawkyrwat Division said that the contractor has already started repairing the subway on Thursday morning and that it is expected that the vehicle will be able to ply from the subway on Friday evening.
