SHILLONG, July 1: Leader of the Opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titosstarwell Chyne, has urged the state government to expedite the introduction of Science and Commerce streams at Sohra Government College and address infrastructure gaps at Sohra Higher Secondary School.
In a letter to Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Chyne noted that the government’s promise to launch the two streams in the 2024-25 academic year remains unfulfilled, even as the 2026-27 session begins. He said the delay has disadvantaged students from economically weaker backgrounds who cannot afford to move to Shillong for higher studies.
Chyne also highlighted the long-standing demand for Science and Commerce streams at the Higher Secondary School in Sohra, which currently only offers the Arts stream. He argued that expanding the curriculum would provide better local opportunities for students in the region.
Furthermore, the KHADC leader raised concerns over the dilapidated state of the temporary building currently housing the Higher Secondary School. Describing the structure as unsafe and unsuitable for a learning environment, he called for the construction of a permanent school building.
Chyne requested the Education Department to ensure the early operationalisation of the promised college streams and to take immediate steps to improve school infrastructure to address the concerns of students and residents.
