Shillong, July 3: Meghalaya’s combat sports fraternity celebrated a historic milestone on Friday as Damerbha Rumnong became the state’s first authentic female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) blue belt and was appointed head of UJAI Northeast.
The announcement was made by CrossTrain Fight Club, Delhi, recognising Rumnong’s achievements in the rapidly growing sport.
A decorated BJJ athlete, MMA coach and entrepreneur from Shillong, Rumnong is currently ranked No. 1 in India and eighth in Asia in her weight category.
She has represented the country with distinction, including winning a gold medal at the AJP Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro Championship in New Delhi.Rumnong is also the co-founder of IDM Fitness and Fight Club, where she trains alongside fellow practitioners Mayveen Sawkmie and Iarapborsing Kharbani.
In another boost for the club, Sawkmie and Kharbani were both awarded two stripes on their white belts in recognition of their steady progress and commitment to the sport.The promotions mark a significant step in the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Meghalaya and the Northeast, providing the region with an authentic BJJ lineage and strengthening opportunities for aspiring athletes to compete at higher levels. For Meghalaya’s growing combat sports community, the recognition marks more than just a personal achievement.
