SHILLONG: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will open a six-lane toll plaza on the Shillong Bypass on Saturday.

An NHAI official informed on Friday that work for the toll plaza was going on for the past six months and is set to become operational from Saturday.

The official informed that a board has been set up near the toll plaza with details about the toll to be paid by different types of vehicles. He added that the toll rates on the Shillong Bypass would be same as the charges on other highways in the country.

The toll plaza will have six lanes to avoid any traffic congestion.

The NHAI official informed that local people who ply on the Bypass on a daily basis would be exempted from paying toll.

The Shillong Bypass was opened for traffic in May last year and since then people have been enjoying a free ride on the scenic road.

The M/S GR – Chetak (JV) which had executed the project will maintain the Bypass for thirteen years.

The 47.06-km Bypass, which begins at Umiam in Ri-Bhoi district and merges with National Highway 44 at Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills District, has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 220.35 crore.
