Manchester, July 5:India captain Shreyas Iyer has equalled an unwanted T20 International captaincy record after failing to register a victory in his first four matches in charge.
Iyer, who succeeded World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, is yet to taste success as India’s T20I skipper.
His record so far stands at three defeats and one no result.
India lost the opening two T20Is of the Ireland series before the first match against England was washed out by rain after only one innings was completed. England then went on to win the second T20I, extending Iyer’s wait for a maiden victory.
The 31-year-old has now joined a list of captains who failed to win any of their first four T20 Internationals in charge.
The list includes Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera, Zimbabwe’s Brendan Taylor, Australia’s Matthew Wade and Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan.
Among them, Shakib endured the longest wait before securing his first victory, eventually winning his seventh match as Bangladesh captain.
Iyer will now look to end his winless run in India’s next T20I assignment and avoid extending the unwanted record further.
With the five-match series against England still alive, Iyer will have further opportunities to end his winless run and steer India back on course.
While the unwanted statistic places him alongside several notable international captains, history also shows that a difficult start does not necessarily define a captaincy stint. (Agencies)
