JOWAI, July 7: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC), Khliehriat Circle, has submitted a formal complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaiñtia Hills regarding the “serious failure” of the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) in the district.
Led by working president Diamon Bareh, the council highlighted that despite government guidelines mandating 25 days of nutrition per month for children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers, many villages receive supplies only once every few months. The JNC noted that regular hot cooked meals and morning snacks for children aged 3-6 are effectively non-existent in several areas.
“This is not an administrative ‘minor lapse’; it is a direct denial of basic nutritional rights,” the JNC stated.
The council pointed to a potential breakdown in the supply chain, noting that the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) reportedly claimed supplies only reach the district every two or three months. The JNC argued that this indicates either a structural failure at the state level or a lack of integrity in local implementation and reporting.
Demanding immediate intervention, the JNC called for a time-bound inquiry into the SNP’s implementation, including a month-wise audit of supplies received from the state versus actual distribution to Anganwadi centres.
The council urged the Deputy Commissioner to fix accountability and ensure corrective measures are taken so the scheme functions as intended. The JNC added that it would continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure mothers and children receive their legal entitlements.
