LONDON, July 8: Linda Noskova became the second Czech woman into this year’s Wimbledon semi-finals, beating Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-3 7-5 in an under-the-radar matchup on Wednesday.
Mertens, six times a Grand Slam doubles champion and seeded 25th in the singles here, had to work hard for her service games, saving nine break points.
Noskova joins compatriot Karolina Muchova in Thursday’s semi-finals. She will face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, who beat Jasmine Paolini of Italy, for a place in Saturday’s final.
KOSTYUK BEATS PAOLINI
Marta Kostyuk made a big impression in her Centre Court debut by beating Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2 to reach her first Wimbledon semifinals on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Ukrainian also reached the last four at the French Open, losing to eventual champion Mirra Andreeva in Paris. (Agencies)
