SHILLONG, July 9: Facing mounting pressure from the public and pressure groups, police have finally registered a case in connection with the alleged molestation of a minor girl by a male nurse posted at NEIGRIHMS. The accused has been issued a notice to appear for examination and interrogation.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Thursday said the case has been formally registered and the victim has undergone medical examination.
“The case has been registered and the victim has been examined. The accused has been issued a notice for examination and interrogation,” Syiem said.
Replying to a query, the SP said the accused is currently in Shillong but is indisposed due to high blood pressure.
The case came to light after the KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle demanded the immediate arrest of the nurse accused of molesting a minor girl admitted to the hospital.
A KSU delegation, led by assistant organising secretary Samuel Kharbani, met the Medical  Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS to seek clarification and press for action against the accused.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kharbani said the organisation received a complaint from the family of a girl below 18 years of age alleging that the nurse had touched her inappropriately while she was admitted to the hospital.
According to Kharbani, the alleged incident took place on July 4, following which the family lodged an FIR at the Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost.
Expressing concern over delay in action, Kharbani alleged that despite the seriousness of the accusations, the accused had not been arrested. He said the Medical Superintendent informed the delegation that the matter is under police investigation and the institute would await the outcome before taking further action.
The KSU urged the police to treat the case with utmost seriousness and ensure a swift investigation, given that the alleged victim is a minor. The union also called for stronger safeguards to ensure the safety of patients, particularly women and children, in healthcare institutions.
