California, July 11: Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has revealed that he initially hoped to continue playing despite suffering a muscle injury during his side’s FIFA World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Spain.
Courtois was forced off in the 71st minute after experiencing discomfort, with Senne Lammens replacing him in goal. Explaining the injury after the match, the Belgian shot-stopper said he first felt a problem in his muscle but believed he could carry on after making a series of saves.The goalkeeper said he wanted to remain on the pitch for a few more minutes, insisting the injury affected only his long kicks.
Courtois was eventually substituted by coach Rudi Garcia, who opted not to take any risks with his first-choice goalkeeper during the high-stakes knockout encounter. (Agencies)
