London, July 12: Brendon McCullum has been removed as England’s Test head coach, bringing the curtain down on the much-talked-about ‘Bazball’ era after a disappointing run of results and growing turmoil surrounding the national team.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the decision following an internal review of the men’s Test setup, just two weeks after Ben Stokes stepped down as Test captain and announced his retirement from international cricket.
While McCullum will continue in his role as England’s white-ball coach, his departure leaves the Test side without both a head coach and captain ahead of the three-Test series against Pakistan beginning on August 19.“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together,” McCullum said in a statement.“There’ve been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way. Of course I’m disappointed not to continue, but I respect the decision. My focus now is on helping England’s white-ball teams keep moving forward.”ECB director of cricket Rob Key will remain in his position despite the shake-up.McCullum’s exit follows a dramatic decline in England’s Test fortunes. After initially transforming the side with an aggressive, attacking philosophy that became known as “Bazball”, England have struggled for consistency over the past two years.
The team has lost seven of its last nine Tests, including a crushing 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand. Off-field controversies further compounded matters, including incidents involving senior players that attracted widespread criticism.
McCullum took over the Test side in 2022 alongside Stokes and immediately revitalised an England team that had won only one of its previous 17 Tests. The partnership produced memorable victories over New Zealand, India and Pakistan, with England winning 10 of their first 11 Tests under the new leadership. However, the early momentum gradually faded. England won just 17 of their next 38 Tests while suffering 19 defeats, with disappointing overseas performances and recurring questions over preparation, discipline and team culture.
The Ashes tour of Australia proved particularly damaging, as England surrendered promising positions before slumping to a heavy series defeat. Their campaign was further overshadowed by reports of poor planning and off-field disciplinary issues.England now face the challenge of rebuilding their Test setup ahead of the Pakistan series. Vice-captain Harry Brook has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Stokes as captain, although the appointment may depend on who succeeds McCullum.Several names are already being linked with the vacant coaching role, including former England coach Andy Flower, Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson, Surrey coach Gareth Batty, Durham’s Ryan Campbell and former Australia coach Darren Lehmann.Despite his departure from the Test team, McCullum’s future with England’s white-ball sides remains secure. He recently guided England to a dominant 4-0 T20I series victory over India, a result that lifted them to the top of the ICC T20I rankings and reinforced the ECB’s confidence in his leadership in the shorter formats.
