TURA, July 14: Six prominent pressure groups from Garo Hills have submitted a joint memorandum to GHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Dhormonath Sangma, urging the council to expedite key reforms, including the creation of a separate electoral roll and the codification of customary laws.
The consortium—comprising the ADE, AHAM, AYWO, FAF, FKJGP, and GSU—acknowledged the current Executive Committee for enacting the GHADC Service Rules and digitising financial transactions. However, they stressed that further structural changes are necessary to protect the interests of the indigenous population.
A primary demand raised was the implementation of a separate electoral roll consisting exclusively of tribal members.
“The fundamental objective of the GHADC is to preserve our unique way of life, traditions, and cultural heritage. The demand for a separate electoral roll reflects the genuine aspirations of our people,” the memorandum stated. The groups noted that while a committee is currently examining the matter, they expect the legislation to be passed at the earliest.
The groups also called for the Codification of Garo Customary Law. They urged the CEM’s office to initiate consultations with stakeholders to reach a consensus on the proposed Bill.
“It is imperative to facilitate the passage of the Garo Customary Law to ensure our traditions are legally protected and accepted across all sections of society,” the joint statement added.
