School van-train collision in WB: Toll rises to five

KOLKATA, July 17: The death toll in the tragic incident at Karnasubarna in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district earlier in the day, when a train collided with a van at a railway crossing, has risen to five, with four being school children and one an adult. Meanwhile, both the Railways department and the West Bengal government have announced compensation for the families of the deceased. Some other schoolchildren and the driver of the van are currently under treatment. While the Railways have announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced Rs 5,00,000 to the kin of each deceased. The CM said that he has directed the administration to provide all possible assistance to the injured and affected families. He also assured that the best medical care is being provided to those undergoing treatment and added that the state Health Minister is personally ensuring that the injured receive the best possible treatment at the medical college and hospital where they are admitted. One dead in firing; Shiv Sena corporator among 16 held

Hingoli, July 17: A 38-year-old man died after being shot in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district, following which police have registered a case against a Shiv Sena councillor and 15 others, an official said on Friday. The incident took place in Kalamnuri town on Wednesday night, they said. According to police, Lukman Siddiqui was shot during a fight with a group of people, including Shiv Sena councillor Kishore Bhalerao, over an old dispute. He later died from his injuries, police said. The number of rounds fired during the attack is being investigated, a police official said. Bhalerao and 15 others have been booked, and efforts are being made to trace them, the official said. Meanwhile, Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad criticised the Maharashtra government over the horrible incident, raising questions over the law and order situation in the state. (PTI)

IRS officer’s daughter’s rape-murder: Police file chargesheet

New Delhi, July 17: The Delhi Police has filed a 973-page chargesheet in a city court against Rahul Meena, the former domestic help accused in the rape and murder of the 22-year-old daughter of a senior IRS officer, officials said on Friday. The chargesheet, a police source said the accused’s primary motive was rape and robbery, while the victim was killed place during the commission of the crime. “His motive was rape and robbery, but the victim was eventually killed. Meena strangled her to death and she died due to asphyxia,” sources said, adding that the chargesheet mentions the accused’s debt but does not refer to online gambling. The chargesheet establishes four key allegations against the accused — unauthorised entry into the house, rape, robbery and murder. The chargesheet was filed after the completion of the investigation by the Amar Colony police station in southeast Delhi. The matter is set for hearing on July 18, the officials said. (PTI)
