SHILLONG, July 25: The Shillong Traffic Police detected 71 traffic violations and realised Rs 85,000 in fines during a coordinated late-night enforcement drive conducted across key locations in the city under Operation Safer Shillong.
The special drive, which began at 11 pm on Friday and continued into the wee hours of Saturday, was led by SP (Traffic) Hari Prasantha along with Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg and Deputy SP (Traffic) David Marak.
With support from the Special Operations Teams (SOT), traffic personnel simultaneously conducted checks at DAD Junction in Rynjah, District Council Point in Lumdiengjri and Laitumkhrah Market.
The operation targeted violations that pose a significant threat to road safety, including drunken driving, rash and negligent driving and the use of illegally modified vehicles.
Officials also verified driving licences and other mandatory documents to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the initiative underscores the police department’s commitment to strengthening traffic enforcement and making Shillong’s roads safer.
“Operation Safer Shillong will ensure consistent enforcement to deter unsafe driving practices and create safer roads for all road users,” Syiem said.
He said similar coordinated enforcement drives would continue at strategic locations across the city to improve compliance with traffic regulations and promote responsible road use.
The SP also thanked the public for extending their cooperation during the operation and reiterated the police’s commitment to fair, professional and consistent enforcement in the interest of public safety.
He further added that Operation Safer Shillong is part of the police’s sustained efforts to curb high-risk traffic violations, improve road discipline and enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians and all other road users across Shillong.
