New Delhi, July 25: Delhi’s first woman mayor and former president of the BJP Mahila Morcha Shakuntala Arya died at the age of 98, Delhi BJP said on Saturday.
Arya’s last rites were performed by her family members at the Lodhi Road crematorium in the afternoon, in the presence of family members, BJP leaders and party workers.
Delhi Mayor Pravesh Vahi on behalf of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and Delhi BJP general secretary Yogita Singh, on behalf of the state unit, laid wreaths on Arya’s mortal remains and paid their last respects.
Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra expressed grief over Arya’s demise and said that the party had witnessed her dedicated public service from the late 1980s to 2005.
Recalling her contributions, Malhotra said Arya did extensive work in the field of women’s education.
She was truly an embodiment of women’s empowerment, and as mayor, her ‘Clean Delhi Campaign’ in 1997 created widespread awareness among the people.
A wave of grief and sadness spread across the party on Saturday as the workers heard about Arya’s demise. (PTI)
