SHILLONG: Along with several other Northeastern states, Shillong has been witnessing high speed winds since Sunday evening.
The sudden change in weather took the Shillongites by surprise and the city was almost in doldrums following erratic power supply in several areas on Monday. The power woes resulted from uprooting of trees in several parts of the city.
“The low pressure area over North Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha has rapidly concentrated in to a Depression and lies centred at 0300 UTC on July 21st over northeastern parts of Odisha and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal near Lat. 22 degree N/ Long. 87 degree E about 50 kms east of Baripada. System would move west northwestwards during next 24 hours,” read the meteorological department observations on Monday.
An official from the Met department said that it is not possible to predict till how long the current weather conditions will persist. The official from the meteorological department also informed that the wind speed in Shillong may vary from 10 KMPH to 25 KMPH.
While the wind speed in Shillong was quite high, it was almost a cyclonic situation in areas like Upper Shillong and Laitkor which are at a higher altitude.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Sanjay Goyal said that there were no reports of damage from any part of the district.
