Protest in Assam over abductions in Garo Hills

Mukul’s effigy burnt

SHILLONG: Hundreds of Assam residents on Monday protested against the growing abduction of Assam-based businessmen in Garo Hills at Mancachar in Dhubri district of Assam and demanded imposition of President’s Rule in Meghalaya.

The protestors even burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma. A 12-hour road blockade was staged by Mancachar Nagarik Suraksha Samitti against the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo Hills.

At least 14 traders have been abducted by militants in Garo Hills in the last two months of which two were found dead.

They civil bodies also submitted a memorandum to the district administration of Dhubri in this regard.
