SHILLONG: A delegation comprising of NEHU students and teachers on Friday forwarded a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil asking for immediate introduction of the Lokpal bill in the parliament for debate.

In the memorandum submitted to the President through Governor RS Mooshahary, the delegation stated that the bill should be adopted as a law without any further delay.

“The draft Jan Lokpal Bill is truly the ‘law of the people’ stated the memorandum.

Expressing shock over the ill-treatment meted out to social activists who are advocating for the bill, the memorandum added, “The Government is deliberately subverting the effort of activists by resorting to use of force.”

Meanwhile, the students, teachers and non-teaching staff of NEHU organised a signature campaign on the University premises here on Friday.

A large number of students, teachers and non-teaching staff of the University put in their signatures on the banners which would be sent to President Pratibha Patil as an expression of solidarity towards the fight against corruption.
