Guwahati: At least seven militants, suspected to be members of the United Democratic Liberation Army (UDLA), an outfit of Reang or Bru tribals, were killed in a gun battle with security forces close to Assam-Mizoram inter-state boundary in Karimganj district in south Assam in the wee hours of Thursday.

A Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) of the Army was also injured in the encounter that took place during a joint search operation carried out by Army and Assam police inside a densely forested area.

A senior police official in Karimganj informed that the joint operation of the Assam Police and the 33 Field Regiment of the Army was mounted following specific inputs about a group of armed rebels setting up a camp at Gutguti-basti inside a forest close to the inter-state border. This group has been involved in carrying out abductions and extortions in the district in the past several months.

“We have so far recovered seven bodies of militants who are all in green fatigues. A few sophisticated weapons have been also recovered,” the police official said.

The bodies could be brought to Rangpur border outpost at only around 6 pm on Friday and will reach the district headquarter on Saturday.
