NONGSTOIN: Despite the National Green Tribunal ban on rat-hole mining in the State and transportation of coal, coal-laden trucks are still seen on the road between Nongstoin and Shillong, plying without any fear of the authorities.
Police have been making untiring efforts to tackle continued violation of the ban, but it appears that the truckers have no fear of being pushed behind bars.
On Wednesday West Khasi Hills Police apprehended four coal-laden trucks and registered cases against the perpetrators.
Three trucks (ML 04 A 3242, AS 01 BC 8798 and AS 01 EC 8348) were seized from Mairang, while another truck  (ML 04 B 0466) was seized from Thahkanar, Nongstoin. The truck drivers were immediately arrested.
A day earlier, Police detected two coal laden trucks (ML 04 B 0085 and ML 04 B 1938) driven by Cheles Suiam and Poikmen Sungoh respectively at 7th Mile, Pasyih, in West Jaintia Hills. Police seized the two trucks and arrested the drivers.
Again on the same day, Police detected one truck (ML 04 B 6309) transporting coal in violation of NGT ban at Deinchynrum on NH-44 in East Jaintia Hills and arrested the driver.
On July 28, during vehicle checking at Mairang in West Khasi Hills, Police detected one coal-laden truck (ML 05 J 5602) driven by one Kitboklang Hujon. Police arrested the driver and seized the truck.
